Rape is a widespread issue in the Philippines. According to reports from the Philippine National Police (PNP), it was one of the most frequently occurring crimes in the nation from July 2022 to January 7, 2023, with 3,762 cases reported. Further reports from the PNP show that, in the Province of Kalinga alone, from January to March of 2024, rape had the highest incidence out of the eight focus crimes (murder, homicide, physical injury, rape, theft, robbery, car theft, and motorcycle theft). Additionally, the 2022 National Baseline Study on Violence Against Children (NBS-VAC) revealed that 17.1 percent of Filipino children aged 13 to 17 years have experienced sexual violence. Of these cases, 14.1 percent occurred while dating, while a shocking 13.7 percent of incidences occurred in the home and 7.8 percent in the community. While statistics do show that the incidence of rape has decreased, there is still much work to be done. At Tabuk Refuge of Hope International, we are committed to doing our part to address this pervasive issue.
